First of all, this is not to be offensive towards the French! This is a point of view from a character who needs to learn French!

Secondly, I want to point out that everywhere there is one French word in Damien's or Fane's speech, they're talking French. If there isn't a French word in their speech, they're talking Romani. It's mostly Fane who'd speak Romani and Damien would answer him in French.

Anyway... 10 years... This is 10 years after 'The Curse of the Mouse' --> mimmime.deviantart.com/art/The…
So, technically Damien would be about 33 years old, but he's stuck at 23, so...^^;
I also want to note that during the 10 years in a dungeon cell, Damien starved to death only to wake up again in excruciating pain. Then starve again and wake up and so on... The weaker he got, the faster the process would be. At the end he had the excruciating pain of waking up pretty much every minute of every day. But, you know... Fane doesn't care. Why should he? Damien's a slave...^^;

Also, speaking French. Those damn French. I don't know if there were more witch-trials in France than any other country at that time. I just needed it to be for the sake of this story.

The Italian mouse, Moretti... Well... He had it coming. He was tortured heavily and Fane got his good news (not sure what those were, but I'm guessing it had something to do with some magic-thingies). Then he'll get to live a few years as Fane's new slave, until Fane lost another deal and snapped his neck because he was the first one of his servants Fane saw.

When I say Fane is happy when Damien nods in approval, I don't mean that Fane needs his slave to approve of anything. It's just the feeling of mastering a new language, and it's more unconsciously than anything. It's just one of the small things that isn't noticeable for the person, but might be for someone else, if that made sense...^^;

At the end, Fane realized Damien had a point, since his servants doesn't understand French. So he just dismissed him.
I can't have Fane loose his temper every time Damien says something to him. That wouldn't happen.

And, did anyone get the music-language-metaphor? I just made a lot of sense to me and seeing that Damien is a gyspy, music would be a good metaphor for a lot of things...^^;

Anyway...

Damien was cleaning the dining room for the fourth time since Fane left the castle. When he left, Fane had seemed rushed and a bit agitated, so the only direction he told Damien was to clean the dining room until he came back. The hastiness in his voice was enough to make Damien hope he found whatever he was going after. However, Damien’s hopes faded when he heard Fane growl as he entered the castle. Not daring to do anything else than clean, Damien stayed in the dining room.
“Slave!” Fane screamed and Damien’s heart missed a beat.
-Please, not again!-  Damien thought frantically as he hurried to the hallway to meet his master. He knew Fane always got angry if he had to ask twice and the

“You wanted to see me, Monsieur?” Damien asked quietly when he opened the door to Fane’s bedroom.
“Yes” Fane replied and gestured for Damien to walk closer.
“Please, sit down” Fane added and Damien stopped in his tracks. Fane had said ‘please’.
-No! S’il vous plait, no!- Damien thought as he felt his whole body tense in fear. Seeing Damien’s terrified reaction sent a smirk to Fane’s lips.
“Master…” Damien started pleadingly, taking a step back, and Fane walked over to him.
”Master, please!” Damien screamed when Fane grabbed his arm.
“I’ll do anything, Master! S’il vous plait, Monsieur!” Damien continued to plead as Fane threw him on the bed.
“Quiet” Fane said and pinned Damien down.

Yeah...I'll just stick with struggling with Spanish thank you. I definitely understand Fane's frustration and I'll continue to understand them once I start practicing for my Spanish CLEP. The only difference between Fane and I though is that I wouldn't kill my parents...I'd kill my book...but not my parents. :XD: Actually using songs to learn a language was how I remember the very few things I do from Spanish I.
